Globally there are more than 27000 machines in use, mainly at suppliers of medical technology, in the optical industry, in aviation, in the automotive industry and in motor sport.
The most important components are developed and manufactured in Gosheim. Hermle’s universal milling machines and machining centres are used for the machining of tools, moulds and series-produced parts.
Hermle produces small to medium-sized three to five-axis milling centres for a wide range of applications.
Even machines for applications with increased demands on precision or machining volumes are manufactured. The different machine models are available with magazine extensions and a pallet changer. Furthermore, various handling systems are offered directly from the manufacturer.

Automation comes before digitalization!As in previous years, the entire product range from the Performance Line series and the High-Performance Line series will be on show in the Technology and Training Centre in 2020. A large number of machining solutions from all kinds of application areas provide an extremely vivid presentation of Hermle product performance.
A new automation solution, the HS flex heavy handling system based on the tried-and-tested HS flex system already installed at hundreds of locations, supplements Hermle's capabilities regarding the automation of universal machining centres. With an impressive transport weight of 1200 kg, Hermle's HS flex heavy is breaking ground in a new weight class.
It goes without saying that all the automation solutions are displayed under production conditions. They show how Hermle continues to pursue the path towards automation on which it embarked over 20 years ago.
Recurring themes of the exhibition are currently trending topics such as the Smart Factory, Industry 4.0, UMATI and digitalization in connection with our own digital components, our 'Navigator' intuitive control GUI and the configurable home screen.

Handling system HS flex heavy - the automation solution with up to 1200 kg of transport weightThe handling system HS flex heavy is designed to be adaptable to 5-axis Performance Line machining centres (C 400 and C 650) as well as to High Performance Line models (C 32 and C 42). This means the C 650 is available automated for the first time.
The handling system HS flex is based on several components, which are supplied and adapted as a complete unit. Only the workpiece storage modules are installed and adjusted on site. As a result, the entire installation – with all Hermle machining centres also being shipped in a pre-assembled state – is available in a very short time, and the user can start machining with little delay.
The flat mineral casting bed, on which the three axes of the handling unit are operated, offer ergonomically very friendly access for the operator. The two double-leaf doors, which have already proven their functional benefits in Hermle’s robot systems, provide a twofold function. During a tool change procedure, they prevent access by the operator, while during machining of the workpiece, they provide access to the working view position and working area while also preventing access to the handling unit.
The rotary, lifting and linear axes of the handling unit enable precise movement of the heavy workpieces up to 1200 kg, including the pallet, between the setup station, storage modules and the machining centre’s working area. With crane loading of machining centres, workpieces with even higher weight and dimensions can be moved into the machine working area. Pallets up to 800 x 630 are handled precisely. To minimise the sources of potential errors for the operator, the maximum workpiece height is queried beforehand at the setup station, thereby preventing workpieces with dimensions beyond specified dimensions from being fed in. The maximum workpiece dimension that can be handled is 800 x 630 x 700 mm (W x D x H).
Particular attention has been paid to the development of the storage modules. One module is installed as standard, and the adaptation of a second module is optionally possible. The modules are structured as a rack, offering maximum customisation potential in the pallet/workpiece arrangement. Up to three rack bottoms with a total of up to 9 pallet storage pockets can be ordered per module. If two storage modules are used, up to 18 pallet pockets are then available. Using a specially developed storage generator, which tests both the permitted weights and dimensions (given that a variety of machine models are possible), the storage arrangement can be defined quickly and easily.
The HS flex heavy, the pallet changer and the RS 05-2 robot system are controlled and managed using the proprietary and convenient Hermle Automation Control System, or HACS. HACS allows for smart order management, which intuitively aids the operator in their daily business via a software solution that can be operated by means of a touch panel. The transparent representation of the orders and required operator actions reduce the organisational downtimes and maximise productivity of the plant. When combined with the Hermle Information Monitoring System, which displays machine states in real time and can be shown on any tablet, desktop or smartphone, these two software tools are collectively a cornerstone of Industry 4.0-capable use of Hermle machining centres.Show More Show less

They are supplemented by the special exhibition ‘Digital Components’ illustrating the three sections “Digital Production”, “Digital Operation” and “Digital Service”. They provide a solid foundation for intelligent order management, transparent machining processes, smart machine turning, paperless shop floor, and sophisticated technology cycles – the milestones for the path to Smart Factory and Industry 4.0. With its individually configurable Home screen and the new Navigator interface, Hermle guarantees user-friendliness and improved use of the touch screen. With UMATI, the new interface initiated by VDW, Hermle is also interlinked while at the EMO and shows the connection with a C 32 U dynamic. The area of generative manufacturing, with components manufactured using MPA technology, also has its own area in the 560 sqm exhibition booth.
The C 42 U MT dynamic from the HIGH-PERFORMANCE-LINE series combines the technologies milling and turning in a unique manner. The manufacture of a motor casing made of 1.2312 steel with a Ø of 600 mm, intended for aerospace engineering, demonstrates the technologies in a single clamping. Trochoidal turning is used as well and demonstrates the huge benefits of combining both processes in a single clamping.

With the C 32 U dynamic, Hermle presents another
5-axes machining centre from the HIGH-PERFORMANCE-LINE series. Here, the focus is on spindle power. The demo machining “Heavy-duty machining” impressively shows the superior performance. With a maximum speed of 15.000 rpm, 42 kW power and a torque of 148 NM, the spindle in combination with the highly rigid design of the C 32 in mineral casting technology shows the possibilities of intelligent milling strategies combined with state-of-the-art tool technology.

The Automation sector, which at Hermle’s currently accounts for approx. 30% of the machines delivered, is growing steadily: The forecast for the next few years sees an increase of up to 50% in machine delivered with automation.
Hermle presents two different automation solutions at the EMO.
The handling system HS flex adapted to a 5-axis machining centre C 400 of the PERFORMANCE-LINE series. On a modular basis, the HS flex can be equipped with several storage modules and can be extended by a second stage to form a multi-pallet system. When combined with the Hermle Automation Control System (HACS), HS flex offers enhanced flexibility and operator comfort.
The compact and modular robot system RS 05-2 with an installation area of only 2 sqm. A lot of know-how was put into the various storage solutions for the storage of the blanks. End users have at their disposal a wide range of different options, from individual die storage over Kanban storage and drawer storage to pallet storage. The RS 05-2 can be adapted to five different machine models by Hermle and is particularly suitable for customers in medical and precision engineering.

“Fritz the Bull” and “Ben the Bear”They make a great pair, because together they are the symbol of the ups and downs on the stock exchange. This will make them a perfect eye-catcher for Hermle as a stock corporation in the Hermle showroom in the future. The bull was milled from solid material on a 5-axis machining centre C 650 from an aluminium block (W x L x H 860 x 480 x 530 mm with a weight of 600 kg). The challenge in this complex 5-axis simultaneous machining task is to turn the blank in the working area of the C 650 (X-Y-Z 1050 x 900 x 600 mm) in two axes (interference area 1100 mm) and to swivel and machine it collision-free (swivel range +/-115°). In particular, collision monitoring in interaction with dynamics and milling strategy requires complex specialist knowledge and good programming skills on the part of the operator. After machining, the finished bull weighs 109 kg. Machining took 35 hours and produced 3.5 m3 of chips. The bear, on the other hand, was milled from solid material on a 5-axis machining centre C 42 from a block of black POM (W x L x H 400 x 150 x 230 mm). Polyoxymethylene, POM in short, is a high-molecular thermoplastic plastic. For its high rigidity, low friction coefficient, excellent dimensional stability and thermal stability, it is used as a technical synthetic primarily for precision parts. The bear was programmed using OpenMind. Its structure is based on an STL model which generates a 3D contour from a multitude of triangles. Both workpieces are classical “show parts” and would certainly not be manufactured under economical aspect. However, they impressively showcase the efficiency of the Hermle machining centres.Show More Show less

Technology meets tradition. Industry meeting at the Hermle Open House
Date:This year’s event set a new record for visitor numbers, with 2900 people visiting from 1300 companies, including 1100 international guests. The visitors from over 30 countries, including large delegations from neighbouring European countries, such as the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Italy, Scandinavia, as well as companies from Russia, USA, Korea, Japan and India, were welcomed and well looked after over the course of the four exhibition days and took a great deal of interest in the Hermle products. The performance capabilities and possible application areas of Hermle machining centres were demonstrated in a clear and impressive manner through interesting examples of machining. For example, a 90 kg solid block of non-machined aluminium was transformed into a delicate 2 kg replica of the Eiffel Tower using an array of very complex milling strategies. Spectacular machining highlights included a wristwatch housing crafted from carbide metal, a Pelton wheel for the hydro power industry measuring 1.00 m in diameter, a titan impeller and, of course, lots of die shapes for tool and mould making. It actually goes without saying that special "exhibition parts" were once again manufactured, showcasing the array of machining options delivered by Hermle products. These parts included a coffee pot that was milled on a 5-axis CNC machine tool from a solid block of aluminium, while the future possibilities of robot technology were demonstrated when manufacturing an adhesive tape dispenser. An MT machine, which combines milling and turning technology, was used to produce a 5-arm candlestick. A panpipe manufactured from aluminium was connected to a compressed air supply and played the melody "Ode to Joy".
Numerous machines equipped with unique automation solutions were showcased and demonstrated under production conditions to satisfy the growing trend towards increased automation, especially in terms of the requirements of Industry 4.0. A huge amount of interest was generated by the robot system RS 2 Kombi with kanban storage, which was designed especially for the showroom. This is where Hermle-Leibinger Systemtechnik GmbH was able to present the many opportunities provided by the storage capacity, pallet and gripper handling and, above all else, the complex automation of Hermle machining centres.
A further highlight is the handling system HS flex, which was unveiled at last year’s Open House and has since gone on to become an integral part of Hermle’s automation solutions. HS flex has, in the meantime, been overhauled and now allows users to change a range of pallets through the application of various gripper changers and thus further enhance the flexibility provided by this automation solution. Just like many other automation solutions, HS flex is controlled by the Hermle-Automation-Control-System or HACS.
Needless to say, visitors had the opportunity to explore and learn about more than 20 machine models fitted with ingenious machining solutions for various industry sectors, such as tool and mould making, aerospace, mechanical engineering, medical technology and model making.
The Hermle User Training used a milled bicycle pedal to highlight the benefits and potential applications offered by digital modules, which are becoming increasingly important, especially in view of Industry 4.0. Hermle Service Competence and the Service Training department were presented at two machining centres in a separate area. Extensive diagnostics and service tools showed users how quickly and competently Hermle Service can be on the scene to solve the problem at hand.

Individually configurable screen view - Hermle integrates the HOME screen
Date:The HOME screen can be used with both HEIDENHAIN and SIEMENS controls and will be integrated as standard for all Hermle models by the summer at no extra charge. Operating comfort and the use of information tools, such as HIMS for multi-machine operation, are, in particular, key to ensuring the machining centres are fit for efficient application.
With the Hermle HOME screen, essential information is centralised within a single interface that is set up individually by the operator. In combination with HACS, order-relevant information can also be displayed on the HOME screen. Other machines with HIMS functions can also be displayed. This provides the operator with a central overview and captures key information in one place. Hermle-Leibinger Systemtechnik GmbH 20 years of ultimate automation
Date:HLS initially focussed on handling and feed systems and basic machining centre automation. However, the importance of robot technology and combining several machining centres to create a manufacturing system soon became clear. And it was not long before additional technologies such as cleaning, measuring and monitoring were integrated into the turn-keys. But, in particular, it was robot technology based on an ingenious platform strategy that allowed HLS to constantly move into new areas of activity and industries.Well over 300 systems have since been installed at Hermle machines, including linear systems with up to five, robot-controlled machining centres. Production machines from other manufacturers have also been incorporated into these complex systems.
Robot system RS 2 Combi with integrated kanban storage
A refined RS 2 Combi robot system, which has been adapted to a C 32 U dynamic 5-axis machining centre, was recently assembled and installed specifically for the Technology and Training Centre and the Hermle Open House, which is held there.
This robot system is a platform-based system with a built-on cabin and a 6-axis industrial robot designed for transporting a maximum weight of 240 kg. The customisable shelf storage systems house both gripper storage stations (for pallets and workpiece handling) and additional tool storage (for large/heavy milling and drilling tools) or various storage stations for pallets and/or workpieces on dies.A kanban magazine for cubic and/or cylindrical workpiece blanks was integrated along with a conveyor belt for semi-finished and finished parts and a chute for reject parts. A setup station with an additional control panel has also been adapted. The robot system can be detached from the machining centre with a door system, so the operator has direct access to the working area of the machining centre (setting up or taking measurements), while the robot can serve other machining centres in parallel.

New machine model C 650
Date:The Hermle company has developed the C 650 to extend its Performance Line series with a major step upwards, and now provides three machine models for economical 3 and 5 axis machining. The Performance Line is positioned below the High Performance Line consisting of models C 12, C 22, C 32, C 42, C 52 and C 62, and it very nearly matches their performance capabilities. The only differences are to be found in the accessory diversity, the price and of course the naming.
Like the C 250 and the C 400, the C 650 uses a modification of Hermle's tried-and-tested gantry-type design, with a mineral-cast machine bed that is manufactured in Hermle’s own brand new mineral casting foundry in Zimmern ob Rottweil. The integrated, rigid clamping table can cope with workpieces up to a maximum of 3000 kg (1050 x 900 x 600 mm) in the 3-axis version, making it ideal for toolmaking, mould construction and machine construction. The swivelling rotary table of the 5-axis version can accommodate workpieces up to 1500 kg (Ø 900 x 600 mm), allowing for highly precise machining.
The traverse path in the stainless-steel-clad working area comprises 1050 x 900 x 600 mm with a vertical table clearance of 775 mm and a door aperture of 1050 mm. Ideal parameters for simple and safe crane charging.
The C 650 has an integrated tool magazine for 42 tools. Two additional magazines with 50 or 88 extra magazine pockets are available as options. The control panel of the C 650 is also designed to swivel easily to the magazine loading location, so the operator can enter the tool data directly into the tool table in the control system. The 200 mm high platform, adapted to the loading point, puts the operator in an optimal, ergonomic position to load and unload the tools.
The C 650 is equipped with the Heidenhain TNC 640 control system as standard, providing access to the full programming capacity of this proven system. The control panel has a large (19") colour TFT touchscreen such as will be standard on all Hermle machines from now on.
Optionally, the C 650 can be equipped with the ergonomically adjustable comfort control panel instead. The control system includes Hermle’s own tried-and-tested setups that give the operator ideal support for managing all kinds of milling operations.
In addition, the various Hermle digital components such as HIMS (Hermle Information Monitoring Software) and HACS (Hermle Automation Control System) are available as options for the C 650.
For servicing, the Hermle Maintenance Diagnosis System is available for continuous monitoring of the machine's condition. It facilitates rapid machine diagnostics and status-oriented maintenance planning.
Options for individual and economical usage extend the range of applications for the C 650. For example, magazine pockets, different cooling and chip removal systems, extractors, tool breakage monitoring, tool measurement systems, touch probes and precision packages can be adapted.Show More Show less

Swabian ‘Maultaschen’ at the Hermle AG trade meeting

From 26 - 29 April 2017, well over 1000 companies and numerous visitors from across the globe are once again expected at Gosheim.
A treat of the technical variety awaits visitors in the form of eight machine models from the Performance-Line and High-Performance-Line, which illustrate the output spectrum of Hermle AG in a wide range of configurations. Some models are of course equipped with cutting-edge automation tools, including the new HS flex handling system, various pallet changers and robot systems.
A complete production hall will be converted into a small trade fair, accommodating over 50 exhibitors from the sectors clamping technology, CAD/CAM, software and control technology.
